What are the defects?
Due to a manufacturing issue, certain plug-in hybrid electric vehicles may not have had the High Voltage battery reinforcing plate or battery cover coated with a protective wax. If water intrudes, there is a risk of perforation or corrosion of the battery reinforcing plate/battery cover over the life of the vehicle.
What are the hazards?
If left unrepaired, there is a risk that the perforation/corrosion could weaken the battery reinforcing plate/battery cover effecting the High Voltage battery security. This may result in the breakdown of the vehicle and/or may result in the potential for a battery or vehicle fire. A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users or bystanders.
What should consumers do?
