Regulator comments
Affected vehicles were originally supplied to the Australian market under a concessional entry pathway (also known as grey imports or private imports). Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited has decided to rectify these vehicles on behalf of the concessional importers. This is due to the complex and technical nature of an airbag replacement and disposal.
Identifying features
VIN (Vehicle identification number)
What are the defects?
Affected concessional import vehicles may be fitted with a Takata NADI 5-AT driver airbag inflator that could allow moisture to enter the unit and degrade the airbag propellant. If this occurs, the properties of the propellant may be changed so that the propellant does not react as intended during a collision, causing mis-deployment of the airbag.
What are the hazards?
If an affected vehicle is involved in a collision, the airbag inflator could rupture, causing sharp metal fragments to enter the vehicle cabin at high speed, killing or injuring vehicle occupants.
There is also a risk that the airbag may underinflate in a collision and may not protect the driver as intended.
